Training Objectives

The major aims to cultivate talents who are well-rounded in moral, intellectual and physical development, master the basic theories of economics, management and trade, and engage in practical activities of international trade and international business and management of enterprises and related research. Through a scientifically designed and rational training program, students are expected to achieve the following professional qualities upon graduation: a broad knowledge base, a solid foundation in mathematics, economics and econometrics, and strong written and oral communication skills in Chinese and English. Based on this solid professionalism, students will be able to apply their knowledge and skills in international economic and trade activities independently.

Practical Session

The major attaches great importance to practice, which includes awareness practice, information retrieval, foreign trade business practice, social survey, computer application and computer practice. Off-campus practice bases have been set up in a number of international companies. On-campus computer practice includes import and export trade practice simulation, securities and futures simulation, foreign exchange simulation and commercial banking simulation.

Professional Features

Based on the market demand and the strengths of Donghua University, the major has established two major directions: International Trade in Services and International Business. The former extends students' understanding of international trade from commodities to services; the latter extends students' professional knowledge from trade to international investment, international marketing and other international business fields, thus broadening students' employment opportunities. At the same time, students are encouraged to take relevant courses to enhance their competitiveness in the field of international trade in textiles and clothing.

Graduates have a wide range of employment opportunities, mainly in professional foreign trade companies, multinational companies, various banks, etc. Some graduates enter customs, commodity inspection, consulting companies, radio stations, government agencies, insurance companies, securities companies. In addition, internship bases have been established, such as American International Assurance Company Limited, Guotai Junan Securities Company, Shanghai Mid-term Futures Company, etc. The aim of the internship bases is to cultivate students' ability to apply theory to practice, which broadens the channels for students' employment; at the same time, the training of students' practical operation ability is cultivated through intensive experimental courses, specifically including commercial banking simulation, securities simulation trading, futures simulation trading, foreign exchange simulation trading, etc.

Professional Features

According to the demand for financial professionals in the construction of Shanghai International Financial Center, combining the disciplinary advantages of the 2 existing PhD programs in financial engineering and corporate finance, the program has established professional direction modules in commercial banking management and financial risk management. Supported by the disciplinary strengths of the doctoral programs, this program will, on the one hand, strengthen the systematic training of students' basic theoretical knowledge in finance; on the other hand, strengthen students' mathematical and scientific skills based on the unique engineering background of Donghua University. The program will also enhance students' practical financial skills through financial experiments, in order to meet the different needs of China's financial industry.
